In recent years, globalization has brought about strengthened international technical exchange and cooperation between our country and other foreign countries in the world. As a result, academic knowledge associated with it is continuously updating now. Also, as the major communication channel for international academic exchange, academic translation is playing an increasingly important part and is becoming a crucial support for our domestic knowledge innovation. Although academic translation is facing great opportunities and challenges at present, it did not draw enough attention from translation circles. Thus, theoretical studies about it have long been ignored.Adaptation Theory, one point from pragmatics, is performed quite actively in academic fields. In most case, domestic scholars and researchers apply it to the field of literature translation and advertisement translation, whereas we seldom view translation of academic writings discourses from Adaptation Theory. This paper focuses on how Adaptation Theory guides academic translation in practice, which is the focal point of this paper. Based on personal translation experiences in academic thesis and writings, this paper analyzes in depth from the perspective of the application of Adaptation Theory, aiming at discussing about the use and function of contextual correlates of adaptability and structural objects of adaptability in translation of academic discourses as well as drawing the attention of most scholars and translators. The studies on academic translation are largely concerned about some experiences of translators rather than theories. Therefore, based on stylistic features of academic thesis and writings, this paper applies Adaptation Theory to the analysis of some common difficulties in vocabulary and syntax such as the translation of terms or passive sentences during translation of academic writings. And then, by analyzing the translation of academic thesis in psychology, the difficulties during translation are raised and resolved. In brief, only by strengthening academic cultural background of translators and performing appropriate adaptation strategies can we improve our academic translation when globalization speeds up and science and technology make rapid progress.
