Project Report On The Consecutive Interpreting For "Thailand New Investment Promotion Strategies:Towards Sustainable Growth" Seminar

Thailand Board of Investment held a series of seminars, themed as "New Investment Promotion Strategies:Towards Sustainable Growth", in cities around the world in 2015. The year of 2015 marked the 40th anniversary of the establishment of China-Thailand diplomatic relations. "Thailand New Investment Promotion Strategies:Towards Sustainable Growth" Seminar was convened in Nanning in September,2015. The objective of the Seminar was to attract Chinese investors to invest in Thailand as well as to provide comprehensive information on establishing operations in Thailand.The author of this report acquired the opportunity to participate in the consecutive interpreting of this Seminar. This Seminar was a productive one with important government officials and entrepreneurs from big enterprises. This report contains English to Chinese and Chinese to English texts. The author evaluates the quality of this interpreting task by analyzing the texts and recording.This report contains five parts, namely task description, pre-interpreting preparation, case study, post-interpreting summary and conclusion. Chapter One introduces the task background including time, venue, theme and other related variables. Chapter Two points out the significance of pre-interpreting preparation through analyzing advance preparation and last-minute preparation. Chapter Three can be divided into two parts. In the first part, from the perspective of Zhan Cheng’s the interpreter’s role as a mediator in political setting, it shows how the interpreter’s role as a mediator will influence the interpreting strategies (including extended rendition, reduced rendition, conversed rendition and other renditions). In the second part, from the perspective of Gile’s Effort Model, it resolves the possible interpreting difficulties, such as high density of the source text, external factors and processing capacity saturation, and gives their respective coping strategies. Chapter Four combines self-evaluation, peer review and the feedback from the listeners and speakers to evaluate the author’s interpreting quality. In the last chapter, a summary of the positives and negatives of the whole interpreting task will be provided, hoping to offer some useful advice for other interpreters.
