An Application Of Syntactic Linearity Principles In Simultaneous Interpreting

This thesis aims at studying the difficulties in the application of Syntactic Linearity in simultaneous interpreting. Syntactic Linearity is an important guiding principle in simultaneous interpreting, which is not clearly stated by many scholars on how to efficiently apply it. Most academic researches still focus on theoretical analysis and lack in pragmatic practice. This thesis mainly applies the principle of Syntactic Linearity by combining the meaning group concept in Sight Interpreting and introducing the "Three-word" Translation theory from Doctor Lin Chaolun. Through these process, all the difficulties and barriers are gradually cleared away. At last, solutions are proposed on a grammatical level. This thesis chooses President Barack Obama’s 2015 State of the Union Address as the study case. The Union Address, as the guiding principle of US government policy, covers extensive areas including politics, economy, culture, education, medicine,military and so on, which makes this report more applicable and scientific. I hope through the interpretation and analysis of this case, more enlightenment and guiding principles will be provided for the Simultaneous Interpreting training.
