With the wide spread of Chinese around the world, to learn Chinese is not only to master a tool but also a kind of fashion. As the number of Chinese learners increases and their learning needs varies, how to teach Chinese effectively has become an essential focus of many researchers. Compound directional complement, a widely used Chinese grammar, also draw much attention of these researchers.This paper mainly discusses the teaching methods of compound directional complement in the Chinese textbook, Boya Chinese, in the hope of throwing light on the teaching method of this grammar point. By analyzing the way to present the compound directional complement in Boya Chinese which enjoys great popularity in China, it is found that there still exists some shortage of directional complement teaching, such as inappropriate lead-in, loosen distribution of relevant grammar points, and insufficient amount and patterns of exercise. As for these problems, from the view of a Chinese teacher, this paper takes Shang qu, Shang lai, Xia qu, Xia lai for examples of compound directional complement. This paper suggests teachers introduce compound directional complement in inductive way and calls for teachers’ clear awareness of the nuances between these compound directional complement. Except to explain the grammar points separately and systematically, teachers are obliged to draw students’ attention to the minor differences. Only teachers are aware of these differences and equipped with solid knowledge base of the difference, students can benefit from the effective teaching. Also, the position of compound directional complement with object has been emphasized and explained in details in Boya Chinese, but this paper suggests teachers introduce these grammars in concise teaching language, even present this grammar directly with exercise and aid students familiarize these grammars with exercise.Then, as for insufficient amount and patterns of exercise, this paper suggests teachers offer Chinese learners some simple practice before introducing compound directional complement. Then teachers scaffold the language point in concise language. At last, learners practice this grammar in diverse ways. It behooves that teachers keep high frequency of recurrence of compound directional complement because training plays a key role in the process of language learning.At last, based on the analysis of the way to present and practice in Boya Chinese, errors of Chinese learners, and firsthand teaching reflection and experiences, this paper makes some suggestions for compound directional complement in the hope of throwing light on the teaching method of this grammar point.
