Teaching of Chinese characters have been the important aspect of the study of foreign Chinese teaching, the characters are always the obstacle for foreign students to study Chinese. Chinese language students who have their own characteristics are different from Chinese major students, their purpose of studying Chinese is different. Recently, the studies about the teaching and studying of characters which focuses on Chinese language students who come to China in one university are relatively lack. Given this, this paper make the questionnaires which are for elementary, medium and senior foreign Chinese students and foreign Chinese teachers in Kunming University of Science and Technology, which is to survey Chinese language students’learning situation, learning strategy and teachers’teaching situation, analyzing the whole situation of teaching and learning characters. The study finds that this university has no yet set Character Lesson or had Character book; the difficulties of characters are strokes, order and structure; all the stages of students most frequently use the strategy of sounds and meaning, the shape of characters and strokes, and they rarely use the strategy of application; part of teachers do not explain phonetic radicals which indicate pronunciation and semantic radicals which indicate meaning of phonogram; teachers always use the Components Teaching Method to teach, use Dictation to test students, and use "the combine of students active analysis and repeated exercise "to correct students’characters mistakes. According to the characteristics of Chinese language students, this paper propose some countermeasures:changing the model of teaching and setting the Character Lesson and compiling Characters Textbook; the emphasis of phonogram teaching; the emphasis of strokes and order teaching; the emphasis of using culture to explain characters; using multimedia as assisted instruction.
