In recent years, Instruction of Chinese Character is a very important part in Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language. However, Chinese Character is too hard to recognize, to read, to write and to remember for foreigners, and it has been a very difficult part for a long time. I was lucky enough to teach Chinese in Confucius Institute at the University of Santo Tomas of Chile in2012. This paper makes a study of problems in learning Chinese Character, by using relative questionnaire survey, interviewing and discussing with those who studied Chinese Character in Confucius Institute, and analyzing the difficulty in learning Chinese Character. The paper also provides an effective help for the Instruction of Chinese Character in South America.The paper contains six parts in all.The first part introduces why such a research happened, and elaborates the goal, the meaning, the way and ideas of the research. This part explains that Instruction of Chinese Character is still a difficult part is Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language, and research on teaching Chinese Character in Chile is rare. Teaching Chinese Character for local students is a worth researching issue in those Latin countries which are not in Chinese Cultural Character Circle.The second part states how to design the research and do an investigation on Chilean students. The difficulty in researching is also mentioned in this part, as well as the last summary. First, the paper brings up all the problems to be solved, picks the research object and confirms the source of textbooks.In the third part, according to the questionnaire, the paper completes the research in two ways, including analyzing the questionnaire on the strategy of learning Chinese Character, and analyzing the situation of learning Chinese Character for Chilean students through a Chinese Character examination. The paper points out how the learning strategies are used by Chilean students who learn Chinese Character, what affect such learning strategies have brought, and what difficulties Chilean students have met in learning Chinese Character.The forth part describes a deeply interview and discussion with10Chilean students to show the problems in learning Chinese Character for local students. Because the questionnaire is too wide, the deeply interview and discussion with10Chilean students help to see the learning strategies of Chinese Character of Chilean students, and the difficulties met in learning Chinese Character. Meanwhile, the paper also shows a judgment on whether specific Chinese Character teaching is helpful to improving in the Chinese Character learning for local students.The fifth part provides some suggestions on how to write the Chinese Character textbooks and how to carry on teaching Chinese Character, through the result of previous chapter. The paper gives some suggestions about learning strategies and learning difficulties in teaching Chinese Character, while gives other suggestions on paying attention on Chinese Character teaching, combination between theory and function of teaching textbooks and development and application of multi-media textbooks.The last part summarizes all the views and conclusions of this paper. It also points out the short comings, and gives a few suggestions on teaching Chinese Character.
