The interpreting practice report chooses the speeches given by Chinese president Xi Jinping under several different foreign situations in the past two or three years as the materials to present a simulated consecutive interpretation practice. The speeches given by president Xi cover several topics such as China-U.S. relationship, cyber-security, nuclear security and harmonious development of different civilizations. Besides, there are a lot of terminologies with Chinese characteristics and many expressions with fuzzy information. Under the formal situation, the interpreter is already quite nervous on the scene, and these fuzzy expressions add to the difficulty of precisely interpreting because fuzzy language makes it harder for the interpreter to understand the source language correctly. What’s more, the different cultural backgrounds, thinking patterns and uses of fuzzy language between eastern and western countries even make it more difficult for interpreters to do the job well. The report starts from the introduction of the interpreting practice, including the source speeches, background information and the purpose of the interpretation. Then the report presents the necessary preparations that need to be done before real interpretation, including a word list and the analysis of conference situation. Next is about the whole process of the complete interpretation followed by some specific interpreting skills in terms of fuzzy language summarized from some typical examples in the speeches. In the end, the report presents a summary for this simulated consecutive interpretation practice, including the problems to be solved and some suggestions to make greater improvement in interpretation in the days to come. The report mainly focuses on the interpreting skills to deal with the fuzzy language in president Xi Jinping’s speeches from Chinese to English. The report first states the principle that should be followed in the interpreting of fuzzy language and then introduces three kinds of skills which are fuzziness for fuzziness, precision for fuzziness and deletion of fuzziness. The writer hopes that this practice report can serve to guide interpreters in their work, to increase the quality of interpretation and to contribute to the foreign exchanges within the international community.
