| Detective novels are one genre of popular literature which are based on incidents reasoning and uncovering the truth, also known as detective reasoning stories. The selected material The Crowned Skull is written by an Australia detective novelist Fergus Hum. In the novel Mr. Bowring designs to kill a friend for money but cast the blame on a other person, so a detective after a series of enduring tracking, gradually uncovers the truth, and finally justice is done. The story is fascinating with complex plots. There are 26 chapters in total, of which chapter 23 to chapter 25 are translated by the author of this report and the translation report based on the translation.This translation report is divided into four parts:task description, translation process, analysis of the translation of The Crowned Skull (chapter 23-25) and conclusion.The first part introduces the background and the significance of the report, and then gives a brief introduction to the author and his works as well as the translation materials. Chapter two description of translation process, including preparation before translation, discusses the characteristics of detective novels, analyses the original text, and lays the theoretical foundation of the report. Translation samples are analysed in three levels:lexical functional equivalence, syntactic functional equivalence and stylistic functional equivalence. At lexical level, the report analyzes how to translate culture-loaded words. At syntactic level, it sum;? up strategies in adjustment of word order, method of adding and omitting. At stylistic level, the report analyzes the translation of figure of speech, such as simile, personification. The forth parts is conclusion, the author summarizes the experience of this translation practice. It gives the author a deeper understanding of the translation, and realizes the importance of putting theor r into practice. The author the report also hopes that this report can help other translators do the similar work. |
