Recent years, cultural heritage protection has made an obvious progress, and protection of ancient cultural relic sites becomes one of hot research topics. With the rapid development of society, most of the sites and their surrounding environments were interrupted or damaged in our country these years. Combined with the complexity of site itself and the environment, protection work become more complicated than before. Cultural site protection comes to such a stage not only safety guard but also protection planning to protect the site remains and its surroundings as a whole.Geographic information science(GIS), in virtue of its powerful data management and analysis functions, has been widely services in a variety of disciplines, such as earth science, urban planning, etc but still in the exploratory stage for site protection planning work. Based on the brief analysis of the geographic information system(GIS) technology in the application of ancient heritage site protection planning, this thesis will focus on the conservation planning for Niumendong site of Huining County, Gansu Province, China. By application of GIS function of collection and storage of data, spatial analysis, spatial statistics, and others, a protection planning method was establish based on GIS to raise the scientific level of ancient sites protection planning. The main research results are as follows:(1) Investigating the information about the ancient sites protection and planning, relevant procedures and methods for ancient sites protection planning was established.(2) Based on collection of literature materials of the Niumendong site and the site investigation, the site background environments features were analyzed. Combined with the archaeological exploration data, the major problems that the preservation encountered were evaluated.(3) Geographic entity database of Niumendong site is created, which can be used for storage of the field survey data, archaeological exploration data, site topographic map, images and other spatial data related to the site protection planning.(4) Feasibility of some techniques used in the protection planning procedure for Niumendong site under the GIS environment was discussed. Protection boundary was reasonably defined based on the fundamental geographic database of Niumendong site according to the principles and guidelines for cultural heritage protection and site planning. With the help of GIS spatial analysis, statistical analysis, map compilation and other functions, planning works completed including transportation, electric and communication lines, basic structures and conservation buildings. Serious maps were exported to make the planning report scientifically and reasonably.
