Translating The ASME Pressure Vessel Code Into Chinese:an Introspective Report

Technical terms and their target-language renderings have been substantially studied by both Chinese and non-Chinese scholars. Focusing on linguistic transfer on the word or sentence level, scholars, however, pay insufficient attention to the role of parallel texts, Internet search engines, and published diagrams in problem-solving and decision-making processes.The author of the thesis was commissioned by the Aerosun Corporation to translate part of The ASME Pressure Vessel Code—"The Design Code" and "The Painting Code." Based on the translation project, this report explores the role of parallel texts, Internet search engines, and figures in publications in smoothing the path for the technical translator whose constant concern is accurate representations of technical terms.
