A Report On The Translation Of The Gendered Society (Chapter Three)

The translation task is The Gendered Society published in 2011, which is written by Michael Kimmel who is specialized in gender research. This book is recommended by our supervisor and the translation is finished by four fellow students and the translator. The translator is responsible for the translation of the third Chapter.Chapter three mainly investigates cross-cultural construction in the perspective of gender. This chapter summarizes definitions of gender and sexuality around the world from different aspects. It assesses sex and gender based on a wide variety of psychological perspectives. Just like approaches used by biologists and anthropologists, Kimmel finds that it is difficult to use psychological approaches to fully theorize difference, power, relationality and the institutional dimensions of gender. This makes Kimmel to put forward the sociological(social construction)investigations of inequality and difference in the first part of last chapter.The report is based on the translation theory named Typology theory put up by Peter Newmark. The Gendered Society is a text that belongs to informative text as major and expressive text as minor. So the translation strategy adopted is communicative translation as a major and semantic translation as a minor. During the process of translation, semantic translation and communicative translation are supplementary to each other. These two translation strategies should reflect the ideological content of the source text and conform to syntactic structure and stylistic features of the target language.This translation practice report consists of six parts: the introduction of translation project, the introduction of source text, the process of translation, the theoretical framework, the case analysis and translation summary.
