The practice task of the author is the translation of Chapter VI(Page No.141-172) of The Gendered Society, an academic work by Michael Kimmel, a well-known professor of sociology with the State University of New York at Stony Brook. Published back in 2011, this book is highly recommended by the author’s instructor and co-translated by five classmates.As an academic monograph in the aspect of social gender theory, the content of the book not only involves inter-sexual relations, but also explores the causes of gender differences and gender inequalities from the perspective of sociology,anthropology, biology, etc. According to the classification of Newmark’s text typology,The Gendered Society is based on the text of informative type and also has a touch of the text of expressive type. Guided by Peter Newmark’s text typology theory in the course of translation, the author explores the application of communicative translation and semantic translation strategies into informative texts in this paper.This report is comprised of five parts. The first part is a brief introduction of the author’s translation project, in which the features and significance of the project as well as the information of the author of the original text and a summary of the text content are introduced; the second part describes the entire process of translation ranging from translation preparation to key matters during the translation process and to revision; the third part brings in a brief introduction of Newmark’s translation theory and translation strategies; the fourth part is an application of Newmark’s theory into translation practice by making an exhaustive case study; in the last part of the report, the author summarizes the lessons and shortcomings in translation practice. |
