A Report On The Translation Of The Gendered Society (Chapter Eleven)

The translation report is the eleventh chapter of the book named The Gendered Society,written by the American distinguished sociologist-Michael Kimmel.The book first published by Oxford University Press in New York in 2000,further which was published the forth edition in 2011.The topic of the eleventh chapter is “The Gendered Intimacies Friendship and Love”.There are more than ten thousand words.The Chapter elaborates on the gender of friendship,gender differences in friendship,other factors which affect our friendship,the historical gendering of intimate life,love and gender and gendered love of American style.On the basis of the source text,the translator got the conclusion that the gendering of intimate life of friendship and love is the result of economic and social changes,love and friendship are deeply human experiences,we should be able to manage on our own.The Gendered Society is a social science academic work,most of the contents are informative texts as well as some expressive texts.The translation strategy put to use by the translator are the communicative translation strategy and the semantic translation strategy under the guidance of the Text Type Theory put forwarded by Peter New mark.The translator follows by sequential translation,free translation,additional translation,conversion and other translation methods to translate the text.The Report consists of five parts.The first part is to introduce the translation task,including introduction of author and source text,text analysis and the significance of the version.The Second is to describe the translation process,which includes preparation before translation,the process in translation and the conclusion after translation.The third is about the translation theory adopted by the translator,they are communicative translation and semantic translation put forwarded by Peter Newmark.The forth is case analysis and the summary of this translation practice,which analyzing from the vocabulary,sentence,text and cultural level.The fifth is the conclusion and reflection of the translation practice.
