Translation Report Of The Multicultures Of Northwestern Ethnic Minorities And China’s Western Development Drive(Sections 2 And 3, Chapter Ⅲ)

This translation report is based on the Chinese-English translation practice of The Multicultures of Northwestern Ethnic Minorities and China’s Western Development Drive. The translator is responsible for the second and third part of the third chapter which involves the religion and the religious culture of the northwestern ethnic minorities and their relationships with China’s western development drive.According to Peter Newmark, the source text can be classified as informative text,which mainly reflects facts. So the translator adopts the “functional equivalence”theory to guide the translation procedures. And the report discusses the functional equivalence from the following four levels: lexical level, syntactic level, discourse level and cultural level. In addition, the main translation strategy is domestication with foreignization as the supplementary strategy. In accordance with both strategies of domestication and foreignization, various translation techniques such as conversion,semantic extension, restructuring and back translation are employed in the translating process. The case analysis is used to describe the translation practice in the application of functional theory.This report is composed of five parts, i.e., translation task, translation procedures,theoretical framework, case analysis as well as conclusion. After finishing such a translating practice, the translator has a clear understanding that translation is not to transfer one language into another, but to transfer one culture into another culture. So the case analysis at language level is just a conversion at surface level. The further meaning of one language should be analyzed from the perspective of cross-culture.
