With the increasing cultural exchanges between China and the west, more and more western masterpieces of all genres are introduced to China. However, amongst them seldom can we see travel notes that are rich in both cultural and topological value. Therefore, this report, based on the translation project of Edward Thomas's In Pursuit of Spring, discussed the translation of travel notes. The translation task, amounted about 100,000 words, was accomplished corporately by the author and the other two translators. This report mainly discusses in detail the process of the translation task and difficult cases encountered. This report introduces Peter Newmark's communicative and semantic translation approaches as the theoretical guidance, under which, difficult cases, including translation of proper nouns, common words,culture-loaded words,complicated-structured sentences and metaphor are discussed.Metaphor translation methods suggested by Peter Newmark are also used to guide the translation of metaphors encountered in this travel notes. The report concludes that,to translate a travel note, translators need not only a profound knowledge of both English and Chinese, but also a deep understanding of the cultural and natural background of the places described in the travel notes. The translation practice also makes the author ponder again on the relationship between translation theory and practice. The author hopes that this report could provide the other translators with useful information.
