A Report On Translation Of Patent Documents-Based On C-E Translation Of Wosa

Patent, as one of the approaches to intellectual property protection, is an exclusive right granted by a sovereign state to an inventor or assignee for a limited period of time. The burgeoning development of economic globalization invites increasing attention on intellectual property protection, and a growing number of Chinese enterprises seek to submit patent applications to an international approval authority under the framework of the Patent Cooperation Treaty(PCT), aiming to enlarge international patent rights of their inventions. The Written Opinion of the International Searching Authority(WOSA) is an important patent document concerning novelty, inventive step and industrial applicability of the claimed applications. The gradually increased international patent applications highlight the importance of patent document translation.This paper, based on the author’s patent translation practice in Beijing RWS Science & Technology Information Consultancy Co., Ltd.(hereinafter referred to as RWS Group), targets at researching and summarizing C-E translation of WOSA under the theoretical guidance of register theory put forward by Halliday. The author takes three variables—field, mode and tenor that corresponds to register theory as the entry point to analyze textual features of WOSA and classify C-E translation problems, thus exploring practical C-E translation strategies and techniques from the perspective of register equivalence. This paper not only integrates and extends the application scopes of register theory, but also provides a new theoretical perspective to research patent document translation, thus, improving patent translation quality and effectiveness.
