In recent years, with the vigorous development of the economy and technology in China, there has been a continuous increase in the number of patent applications. In order to enter the global market and broaden the scope of intellectual property protection, more and more Chinese patents have requested to obtain international intellectual property protection.Patent Cooperation Treaty(PCT)stipulates that a patent application that enters the international stage must be provided with the Written Opinion of the International Searching Authority(WOSA)in the corresponding language. As a result,high-quality WOSA translation is critical for a new patent to successfully obtain international intellectual property protection.Based on C-E translation projects of WOSA projects that the translator has undertaken at Xian Office of Beijing RWS Science & Technology Information Consultancy Co.,Ltd.,this translation practice report firstly demonstrates the rationality and feasibility of functional equivalence theory in the guidance of WOSA C-E translation. Then, the translation problems that occur during the translation process are summarized and analyzed with specific cases: at the lexical level, failures in dealing with polysemy and part of speech are discussed;and at the syntactical level, failures in dealing with complex logic relationship and ambiguities are analyzed.Next,by analyzing specific cases, corresponding translation techniques and methods, such as conversion, contextualization, division and reorganization, and addition, are provided under the guidance of the functional equivalence theory to solve the above-mentioned translation problems at lexical and syntactical levels. After this translation practice, the translator finds that the functional equivalence theory could effectively guide the patent text translation, such as WOSA translation. The meaning equivalence at lexical and syntactical levels could be achieved in the translated version, instead of only superficial formal equivalence. It is expected that this report could provide a reference for future WOSA translation practice.
