C-E Translation Of Metaphors In Diplomatic News From The Perspective Of Construction Grammar

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs(MFA)website is the authoritative platform for releasing information about foreign policies and development of China.Thus,the translation of diplomatic news of the MFA website is particularly important.The author has been a member of the C-E news translation project of the MFA website,which is the cooperation project of MFA and Xi'an International Studies University(XISU).During the translation process,the author notices a wealth of metaphors in diplomatic news.As a cognitive tool,metaphor conceptualizes abstract political thoughts and clarifies complex diplomatic events,playing an important role in promoting diplomatic ideas of China.Therefore,metaphor translation in the project is of significance.However,few studies on metaphor translation in diplomatic news are conducted and they mainly focus on Conceptual Metaphor Theory and Conceptual Integration Theory,etc.,putting their emphases either on the meaning of metaphor or on the form of metaphor.As suggested by Cameron,metaphor study should be conducted with the combination of form and meaning.Construction Grammar holds that metaphor,as linguistic signs,its meaning and form should be given the same emphasis.Therefore,this thesis takes this theory as the theoretical support with an attempt to explore metaphor translation with a relatively new perspective and conclude practical translation techniques.Specifically,firstly,this thesis effectively identifies metaphors according to the authoritative Metaphor Identification Procedure Vrije Universiteit(MIPVU).Secondly,based on source domains,this thesis classifies and analyzes metaphors.Finally,under the guidance of Construction Grammar,the author sets up three translation techniques for metaphor,hoping to provide practical guidance for participants of this translation program.
