The theory of cohesion was first expounded systematically by M.A.K. Halliday and Ruqaiya Hasan in their book, Cohesion in English, published in 1976. And this theory has been widely used in text analysis ever since. According to the classification system used by Halliday and Hasan, there are altogether four categories of cohesive ties of English: reference, substitution, ellipse, and conjunction. Since the application of “reference” in Chinese and English is quite different, the applied analysis of reference has great impact on the effective transmission of information in Chinese-English consecutive interpreting and the logic and consistency of English texts delivered by Chinese interpreters. Therefore, as a practice report of Chinese-English consecutive interpreting, this thesis will focus on analyzing the application of reference to Chinese-English consecutive interpreting through case study. At the same time, the author hopes that through the comparison of reference such as endophora, exophora, and personal reference in Chinese and English, the impact that the application of reference has on the effective transmission of information and the logic and consistency of English texts in Chinese-English consecutive interpreting can be demonstrated.
