The similar-root nouns, are that the monosyllabic nouns and the attributive disyllabic nouns in modern Chinese, which contain the same meaning and the same morpheme. This paper focuses on the similar-root nouns and tries to explore their grammatical functions. Current research start from several aspects such as meaning, syntactic function, rhythm, use of language, focusing on the differences of similar-root nouns, but the fact is that the study of the language itself is not sufficient. Based on the previous study, we choose three pairs of similar-root nouns that are “huā-xiānhuā”, chē-qìchē, sǎn-yǔsǎn, and select the former 300 cases which are from the Center for Chinese Linguistics PKU. According to their grammatical function in the sentence, we have a detailed classification and try to use the statistical methods to have an objective comparison.Based on the above ideas and methods, through case analysis study, we reached the following conclusions: the single and double syllable similar-root nouns is used for object or the main part for the object, subject or the main part of subject, and then attributive or the main part of attributive. When these words combine with the other ingredients, syllables are different: monosyllabic nouns combine with a monosyllabic component that is “1 + 1"; disyllabic nouns combine with a disyllabic component that is “2+2”. The new research perspective not only gives a detailed and objectively analysis about the grammatical functions of similar-root nouns, but also provide evidence for the previous studies.Section of this article is organized as follows: The first part is an introduction, describes the contents of study, research significance and the methods; from the first chapter to the third chapter discuss the grammatical function of the three pairs similar-root nouns; Chapter IV summarize the paper and express the similarities and differences between the attributive disyllabic nouns and their monosyllabic ones.
