The translation of materials related to medical science, which is characterized with highly claimed expertise and expressed often with terms unfamiliar to outsiders, has been commonly regarded as one of the most difficult fields by experienced translators. In recent years, the deepening cooperation between China and other countries has imposed a higher requirement on both medical translations and their quality.A discussion has been made on the English-Chinese translation of Essential Oils Desk Reference. In it, the author briefly introduces the source, background and significance of the source text and the translation theory and CAT(Computer Aided Translation) tools. Meanwhile, based on the communicative translation theory of Newmark, from the aspects of terminology, sentences and discourse, this practice report puts forward six translation techniques-- noun merging, information amplification, verb serialization, sentence pattern adjustment, topic sentence postposition and logical conjunction.Drawn from the report, cognitive awareness is achieved that translators in E-C medical translations should consider the cultural as well as the linguistic features of the readers in the target language, that methods of literal translation and free translation should be flexibly used, and that when participating in the translation project, translators should appropriately apply CAT tools, on-line search engines dictionaries and other means to ensure the consistency and accuracy of the translation.
