With the development of science and technology and the increase of international information exchange, more and more patent holders realize the necessity of protecting intellectual property. This brought ever-increasing demand for E-C translation of American patents, which provides E-C translators with great opportunities to learn and practice. However, due to the characteristics of patent texts--complete,clear,concise,and exact, this could also be a challenge to those less experienced. This report is based on an American patent titled “Fruit Peeling Apparatus”.Taking its textual characteristics into account, the author applies translation strategies and techniques, such as literal translation, free translation, fixed translation, division,or readjustment of word order to solve the problems encountered during the translation process with the guidance of Peter Newmark's theory of Communicative Translation. This report consists of four chapters. The first chapter is the Introduction which summarizes the status quo and achievements made in patent translation, and introduces the characteristics of patent texts and the applicability of Peter Newmark's theory of Communicative Translation to patent translation. The second chapter expounds the project background,pre-translation preparation, translation procedures and posttranslation activities. The third chapter is the core of this report, which provides a detailed case study of the translation in the levels of words, sentences and style, aiming to present corresponding translation strategies and techniques. The last chapter is the Conclusion which concludes both findings and limits of this translation report. It is hoped that this report could provide reference to those engaged in E-C patent translation.
