As exchanges in politics, economy, culture and an array of aspects become more and more frequent among countries, interpreters play an increasingly important role in our society. At the moment, liaison and escort interpreting, consecutive interpreting and simultaneous interpreting are widely used. In the guidance of the interpretive theory, the author made a mock consecutive interpreting for the speech delivered by Bill Gates and Melinda Gates at the commencement of Stanford University in 2014. Translation skills including inversion, conversion, division and omission are used in terms of interpreting of English long sentences. At the meantime, some problems are found out. Based on this task, the author wrote this practice report, hoping it can play a guiding role for interpreting tasks in the future. This report makes analysis and summary of the mock interpreting task from five aspects covering task description, process description, translation theory, case analysis, summary and illumination. The first part consists of the introduction, content and features of the task. The second part of the report gives a detailed introduction of process of the practice in respect of preparation, procedure of the mock interpreting and summary after the task. The third chapter basically expounds the concept, translation principle and procedures of the interpretive theory as well as how translation skills are used for the interpreting of English long sentences in a flexible way. The fourth part of case analysis represents the main body of the report, which makes an illustration of the application of inversion, conversion, division and omission in respect of translation of English long sentences. The last part contains summary and illumination after the task. Thanks to this practice, the author finds out where errors and shortcomings stand, helping get a clear understanding of efforts in the future. At last, the author hopes this report could provide references for interpreting learners.
