As China becomes more important in global arena, formal Chinese speeches addressed to people at home and abroad become more, which impose heavier burdens on interpreters because long sentences with more complicated structure and more information are frequently used in formal speeches.Hence, this thesis chooses to analyze how to interpret long Chinese sentences in three typical formal speeches in different forms, which cover all three types of long sentences interpreters need to cope with. The thesis aims at solving problems in interpreting long Chinese sentences based on the Interpretive Approach through case studies. The main skills for coping with long Chinese sentences include linear, reversing, splitting and recasting(paraphrasing)skills based on the audience-oriented principle and three stages of interpreting: understanding, reorganization and delivery of the theory.Under the guidance of the theory, common long Chinese sentences in formal speeches are well interpreted by applying corresponding skills and the overall effect of interpreting is improved.
