Research On Rational Use Of Negative Space In Book Layout Design

As a design element in book layout design, negative space interacts with words, pictures and other physical spaces, which affects the information transfer for book content and building of reading order and atmosphere. At the moment, problems of disorder layout, low readability and legibility etc existed in some book layout designs and the root cause is the not deep cognition and research on negative space, which greatly affects the quality and quantity of book layout information transfer and receiving. For this situation, this article proposes to reinterpret the negative space, guide design of negative space based on design principle and reshape people’s understanding of negative space.This paper describes concept, artistic characteristics and manifestations of negative space and the contradictory and unified relationship between negative space and positive space; makes research on the specific performances of negative space which has been reasonably applied in book layout in the aspects of form, function and aesthetic etc; analyzes and demonstrates the important function and meaning of existence of negative space in book layout design based on case studies; summarizes design functions that the negative space should follow in book layout design; applies concept of “Elasticity” in physics to the negative space design of book layout with combination of adjustable, continuous changing and flowing and expanding characteristics of negative space to demonstrate the personalized design request of negative space.Through mutual completion and verification of concrete examples unscramble and theoretical analysis, design workers could be inspired to rationally utilize the characteristics of negative space to have regular and personalized expressions. Consequently, readers could be motivated to interact with books, that is of benefit to optimize book layout design language.
