Research On The Current Status And Problems Of Family Caring Model For The Elderly In Urban China

As a traditional model of pension, family caring for the elderly has so long beenoccupying a dominant position among the models. However, with the deterioration ofpopulation aging, sustained intervention of population policy and changes of familystructure, new features of ageing, empty-nested, family miniaturization have taken on,which poses a severe challenge to the traditional pension models, particularly prominentin urban China. Thus, it has become an important issue to solve these existing problemsby understanding the status and analyzing objectively the main factors.In this light, the paper makes analysis on the social status, summarizing suchrealistic background as ageing and empty-nested. Data from National Survey of theAging Population of Year2010shows the age&gender structure, marriage status,education level, living mode, health&medical condition of the elderly caring in urbanChina. Based on the data, we separately discuss the three key parts of family pension,that is, economic situation, caring status, spiritual comfort and influences.On this basis, the paper summarizes the main problems in the family caring for theelderly in urban China including the difficulty for the elderly family in coping withhealth risks, gradual weakening in the resource supply for family elderly care and thespecial disadvantaged groups. In the end, we put forward such policy proposes as toimprove the security system for the urban elderly, establish resource network of familycaring, set up concept of harmonious society and enhance family support ability.
