National identity is an important foundation which a nation independent nations of the world. The world including China is concerned about national identity, and also takes various measures to continuously strengthen the national identity of nationals. As an important way to achieve modern national identity, political ritual is a kind of tool to strengthen community and national identity. Especially is that kind of political ritual which implemented by the official state actors. It is strategically used to strengthen national identity to legitimize the existing political order and power relations.The early days of People’s Republic of China (1949-1956) is an important period to achieve the national identity of our nationals. This thesis focused on political rituals of the period, such as the founding ceremony, the first session of the National People’s Congress and the signing ceremony of "Korean War Armistice Agreement", etc. And this thesis based on news reports of "people’s Daily" that about political ritual. It used multi-disciplinary theory to analyze the political ritual how to construct national identity in the nationals. The paper gives a panoramic scan of the political ritual of new China, such as, social mobilization before the political rituals, the specific ritual process, and media communication on the ritual, which demonstrated nation how to mobilize populace to participate political rituals, and effectively reached interacting with the state. Then, the paper interprets the various political ritual symbols, namely the basic elements of rituals, symbols and media reports. And the paper micro analyze how nation and media to foster nationals’ national identity through ritual symbol. Analysis shows that the new Chinese political ritual ultimately realized nationals’national identity through three aspects, first, from value aspect to strengthen the order and identity, etc.; second, from the ideological level to increase knowledge and memory, etc.; third, from a practical level for social mobilization. Finally, the thesis gives a brief analysis of the successful experience and shortcomings when new China used to adopt the political ritual to achieve national identity, and of inspiration for today’s Chinese political ritual.
