After the Meiji Restoration, Japanese diplomatic mode has experienced atransformation from TR (Treaty Revision) diplomacy to AtE (Alliance to Expansion)diplomacy. The first Anglo-Japanese alliance signifies that Japan has determined to allywith powerful countries as its diplomatic mode based on expansionism. Thereafter, theRusso-Japanese and Germany-Japanese are extension of Japan’s modern diplomaticmode.This paper is composed of three parts: introduction, body and conclusion.The introduction is about the research achievements on this thesis at home andabroad, and makes an analysis to deficiencies in existing literatures as well as to thesignificance of studying this thesis.The first part of the body introduces Japan’s explorations on its diplomatic mode inmodern times. After the Meiji Restoration, western major capitalist countries started theirtransforms to imperialism, and became violent in colonial expansion and carving up theworld. Japan, under compulsion, was forced to sign a series of unequal treaties, openingup the TR diplomatic mode. With the enhancement of its national strength, Japandeveloped the continental strategy of outward expansion on the basis of departing fromAsia for Europe.The second part of the body elaborates the diplomatic environment of the firstAnglo-Japanese alliance. After Japan had successfully completed its TR diplomacy,Britain, in order to acquire interests in Asia, was actively and diplomatically to makecontact with Japan who had deeply expanded into Asian regions. After the Sino-JapaneseWar of1894-1895, however, Japan was diplomatically isolated with the event of "ThreeCountries’ Intervention". Japan began to seek allies on the other hand meanwhilenegotiating with Russia. After the Boxer Rebellion, Russia’s expansion in northeastChina posed a threat to Japanese and British interests, making the relation between thetwo countries developed rapidly. With the decision collectively approved by Japanesesenior statesmen, Japan determined to take the Anglo-Japanese alliance as its diplomaticstrategy. The third part of the body presents the diplomatic negotiation during and the maintreaty content of the first Anglo-Japanese alliance, and analyzes the influence of suchalliance on great-power relations and international configuration.The last part investigates the determinative cultural factors of Japan’s moderndiplomatic mode and summarizes its basic features.This paper points out in the conclusion that: Japan’s modern diplomatic mode has adeep and profound influence that has not only promoted the rise of Japan, but willaccompany with its ups and downs in future, which is worth for us to learn from.
