Media Reports In Taiwan On Diaoyu Islands

The Diaoyu islands dispute has been one of the themes between China and Japan since1970, it is the great obstacle of the relationship. On the research of the Diaoyu islands disputes, the researchers mainly focus on the sovereignty dispute of the two countries. They try to demonstrate whether Diaoyu islands belong to China or Japan by using the historical basis and the international laws.United Daily News and Liberty Times are influential newspaper medias in Taiwan, and belong to different factions. On the Diaoyu island disputes, both of them pay high attention to the disputes. The thesis chooses the news of2012as the main object for the study, and a part of news of2013for addendum.The first part of the article is to elaborate the origin of the disputation, and the evidence of China and Japan on the dispute. The role that Taiwan plays in the disputation is recounted in the first part. Government of Taiwan shows different attitude in the different period, it is because different partisan has different purpose on the disputation.The main parts of the article are the second part to the fourth part. On the second part, the frequency of the Diaoyu islands appears on the newspaper are the study object, and the sections are the object too. International News, Cross-Strait Relations and Freedom Review are the sections selected. There no big different between the two newspaper on the frequency, but through the study on sections, Liberty Times and United Daily News are different on many sides, especially on the attitude for the mainland. The third part is to demonstrate three key words’Sovereignty’’Defending the Diaoyu Islands’and’Fishing rights’. Through expounding, the standpoints of two newspapers are obvious. In the fourth part, three hot themes on the Diaoyu disputes are the objects.Depending on the above analysis, the commonalities and divergences between Liberty Times and United Daily News on the Diaoyu disputes are manifest. Both of them belong to different factions. Ethnic identity is the main point of the divergence.Cooperation between Mainland and Taiwan to protecting the Diaoyu islands is significant, but consensus has not formed in Taiwan. The Green Camp is an exclusive attitude on the cooperation with mainland, does not want to offend the United States and Japan. With Blue camp insisted protecting the Diaoyu Islands, but due to the mutual trust between the two sides is not solid, and therefore the Blue Camp does not want to cooperate to protecting the Diaoyu Islands with the Mainland. The establishment of cross-strait mutual trust mechanism and the cross-strait cultural exchanges between Taiwan and the Mainland for the elimination of hostility and suspicion has very important significance.
