Study On Social Integration Of The Three Gorges Migrants

Millions of the Three Gorges migrants’ relocation is a systematic engineering, whichinvolves the fields of economy, politics, culture, ecology and society. The subsequentdevelopment of migrants, especially the inter provincial migrants’ social integration is thekey to the success of the migration project. This research is mainly aimed at the ThreeGorges migrants who moved to Zhangdian District Zibo City Shandong Province in2002and2004. This paper analyzes present social integration of the Three Gorges migrants inthe fields of economic life, political life, cultural and psychological life and social relationnetwork, by using relevant theory of sociology, such as socialization and social role.This paper is divided into four chapters. The first chapter is introduction. It mainlyelaborates the background and significance of this paper, carding domestic and foreignresearch literature on migrants’ integration, and prepares related theory for the followinganalysis, and defines the core concepts and research methods. The second chapter analyzespresent social integration of the Three Gorges migrants who have migrated to ZhangdianDistrict Zibo City Shandong Province, involving economic life, political life, cultural andpsychological life, social relations, etc. The third chapter mainly summarizes the problemsexisting in the process of migrants’ social integration and chiefly carries on the analysisfrom the perspective of historical and cultural factors, social economic factors, policysystem, social support factors and migrants themselves, etc. The fourth chapter is aimed atthe problems and the causes in the social integration of the Three Gorges migrants, andpoints out some suggestions which should be made from the following aspects. Thepolicy system level: drawing up a reasonable plan; strengthening the policy support for theThree Gorges migrants; improving the mechanism for political participation of migrants.The socio-economic level: establishing and perfecting the management and supervisionmechanism of resettlement fund; establishing and improving the employment servicesystem; stimulating employment through entrepreneurship. The cultural and educationallevel: strengthening the scientific and cultural knowledge of migrants, and providing thecorresponding vocational skills training; treating the migrants culture correctly, andstrengthening the construction of migrants culture; the Three Gorges migrants shouldchange existing habits and customs to integrate into the local society actively; localresidents should cooperate with the Three Gorges migrants actively, promoting theintegration process.
