Study On Square Dance From The Space Perspective

In recent years, as people in the pursuit of leisure life and healthy body, a square dance with its characteristics of easy to learn, low cost, open has beening generalized to every corner, which attracts the attention and discussion of the society from all walks of life. This paper analyses and researches the action subject of the square dance, the physical space and social space through Lefebvre’s space theory and the participatory observation and depth interview method. The first part of the text mainly introduces the basic situation of the square dance, the second part analysis the square dance involving diversified action subject, the third part introduces the material form of square dance, the fourth part discusses the social space of square dance, and the final reflects the possibility that square dance could become public domain.The results of the study are as follows:Firstly, a square dance involves multiple action subjects, mainly middle-aged and old women. Square dance action subject has diversified role, the role of the core staff includes the organizers, sponsors, dance teacher, opinion leaders, salesmen and consumers. Ordinary members play the role of the learner, the propagandist, salesmen and consumers. "Others" as a kind of special action subject includes itching, inhabitants and walkers.Secondly, Square dancing is a kind of physical space and social space. The physical form of square dance space is satisfied with the space on the vision of "accessibility", and its open physical space is the condition of "accessibility" that makes the observer comes into space possible. Space may not be a mental abstraction, and also could not just a physical form on the objective existence, but is the existence of the combining between physical space and the meaning of the social space behind.Thirdly, the combining of the material space and social space of square dance constitutes a unique spatial practice. Spatial practice is the using, controlling and creating of space. The subject of social action is a bridge that connected significance of space and the physical form. Subject’s social action brings social significance.Fourthly, as a kind of spatial practice, square dance satisfies actors’ goal of physical and mental health and interpersonal harmony. Actors don’t concern about space itself, but are more focus on how to put them feelings into the shape of the space, and meet their physical and mental health and interpersonal harmony. Healthy is the core discourse of square dancing, and action subject care about their health. As a kind of effective social carrier, square dance contributes to action subject’ harmonious interpersonal relationship.Lastly, the actors form a new communication mode and social relation network through square dance. Actor’s body and the space is a relationship of "mirror and image", in this relation the space is the shadow or the image, and actor’s body is mapping and penetrated with its own space each other, which is the relationship between human and space, it also provides a based space between people’interaction. Actors constantly interact with other, which formed their own relatively fixed communication mode and stable social relations network, this can also be seen as their community construction.
