A Research On Marx’s Social Space

Social Space didn’t get any attention until Henri Lefebvre published his representative work The Production of Space in 1974, Space was depreciated owning to its attribution of elucidation, analysis, concept, death, stationarity and intertia before that year. With fast development of globalization, informatization and urbanization, human society has entered to a brand new era, but varieties of space problems couldn’t find a satisfying answer from traditional philosophy theories. Different schools joined the discussion about social space, interacted with Marxian social space, tried to stress the social criticism of Space, and to construct historical-geographical materialism. All these efforts expressed a kind of correction to the knowledge pattern of traditional philosophy and sociology.There were mainly three opinions about social space:mirror of natural logical; sublation of natural space and reflection of human relations of society. This paper tended to the third because it pointed out the essence of social space was human relations. Marxian social space talked about three questions in two periods.Social critical theory of twentieth century experienced several turns before space criticism came to the center of the stage. Different schools tried to explain Marxian social space in various approaches, such as Heterotopia of Focault, Time-Space compression of Harvey, The Third Space of Soja, Flowing Space of Castells, Cognitive Mapping of Jameson, Intuitive Space of Merleau-Ponty and so on. Several representative theories of New Marxism and postmodernism were chosen to make clear their relation with Marxism, to explore the development logic of capitalist social space, and to discuss the influence of space production to the world, then to learn the valuable achievements on the basis of sublation. The largest contribution they made was pointed out that current social space contradiction was globalization of social production and private ownership of spatial resources. Domestic research on Marxian social space was the requirement of age, was theoretical demand of Marxism, was the latest property of the Sinofication of Marxism, was also useful to Chinese social production. Four perspectives(capitalization, globalization, urbanization, humanology) of domestic Marxian social space were discussed in Chapter three, achievements and disadvantages were discussed at same time. Just like Time was eternal truth, Space could share the same status, because human history on the other hand was the history of space too. Social space formation in the future must accord with the objective principles of human history development and propel the society forward to justice continuously until step in to the realm of freedom. Inevitability, possibility and approaches were discussed in chapter four.
