The mass population migration is the main feature of the rapid urbanization in present China. On one hand, The population migration, which accelerates the process of urbanization in China, has become an important engine to improve the level of urbanization. However, the current migration is temporary, and as a result, the quality of urbanization has been reduced. The National New Urbanization Planning (2014-2020) puts the urbanization of the floating people on the agenda. It points out that we shall make great efforts to allow over 100 million people including migrate workers and other permanent residents become urban residents in the next few years. On the other hand, the family migration of the floating people, which marks the real population urbanization, has already become a trend of China’s labor migration. So far abundant achievements have been attained in personal migration of the floating population. However the study on family migration is still a newly emerging subject. Affected by the household registration system and the land system with Chinese characteristics, China’s family migration can be divided into two stages, in the first stage the family members moved to resettled areas without settlement, and in the second stage, the migrate family settled down in urban areas. Most of the existing studies focus on the first stage, however, the second one is the crucial stage to improve the level of urbanization. This paper aims to explore the floating population from the perspective of family migration. It sets up a framework in four aspects including individual factors, family factors, resettled areas and out-migrating areas based on Push-Pull Theory, Human Capital Theory of Labor Migration and NELM. Since the first mover has the biggest say in family migration, the individual factors in this paper refer to the first migrants. The author analyzes the influencing factors in the two stages of family migration by using the method of binary logistics model. On one hand, by reference to personal migration, this paper discusses the factors that influencing family members moving to resettled areas. On the other hand, it analyzes the factors that promoting the migration family to become long-term residents contrast with the family who didn’t reside in urban areas. The major findings of this paper:1. It studies the trend of family migration and finds that the family migrants are more eagerly to settle down than personal migrants. 2. In the stage when family plays a decisive role, the factors like the personal factor, the family factor, the social insurance in resettled areas and the regional disparity hold the major part. While in the other stage, except the regional disparity, the educational background, the influence of the family factors, the social insurance and the housing condition in the resettled areas all have been expanded.3. The quality of the labor force, the household types, the land and the social insurance present the major influencing factors in family migration. Finally, based on the analysis, the paper provides some advice to improve the settlement of family migration.
