Investigation Report Of The Social Life Of The Elderly Of Losing Only Child

China is now experiencing social transformation and striking social contradictions. In the wake of social transformation, some individuals face certain changes or suffer sharp pains, and meanwhile, partial population is also marginalized as a vulnerable group in the society. Over three decades ago, China promulgated family planning policy in order to address the contradictions between population and economic growth. Despite the tremendous contributions to China’s economic growth, family planning policy also exercises an immeasurable negative influence on China’s family structure, such as the emergence of the elderly of losing only child. Due to the wide existence-and rapid increase of the elderly of losing only child in China as well as the unsound social pension support system of the elderly of losing only child, supporting the elderly of losing only child has become a great social concern. Therefore, how to address the supporting problem of the elderly of losing only child and improve the social pension support system of the elderly of losing only child has evolved into an urgent problem that needs to be solved by Chinese government. Government is required to tackle these social problems in a positive manner and take proper measures to mitigate the social exclusion of the elderly of losing only child gradually for the purpose of encouraging them to rebuild social life.This paper explores the elderly of losing only child from four angles in reliance on social support theory. Firstly, this paper gives a view of the studies on relevant issues such as social rebuilding of the elderly of losing only child, as well as summarizes the research achievements made by the previous scholars on this group and the existing problems. Secondly, this paper depicts the basic situation and social life of the elderly of losing only child in S Community of Hefei City, shows the social life of the elderly of losing only child there, and understands the social support of the elderly of losing only child emphatically., Thirdly, this paper discusses on the social life plight of the elderly of losing only child in S Community of Hefei City as well as the necessity of social support. Apart from these, a detailed description is made on the difficulties and problems that the elderly of losing only child encounter in social life to reflect the insufficient social support of the elderly of losing only child, particularly the lack of subjective support. The elderly of losing only child will be trapped in an unprecedented plight after suffering the family disaster-the loss of their only child. Facing the death of their only child, the elderly of losing only child will have to deal with everything by themselves in their remaining years, such as disease, poverty, huge pension anxiety, and tremendous psychological trauma. Currently, the elderly of losing only child is facing the tough dilemma of social exclusion. Particularly, their own voluntary exclusion has disconnected them from their social network gradually, which will lead to self-enclosure and the greater difficulty in obtaining social support. Based on this phenomenon, the necessity of social support for the elderly of losing only child, particularly the necessity of spiritual and psychological support, is discussed. Fourthly, to address the social support problem that the elderly of losing only child faces, strategies and suggestions are proposed from three aspects, including the objective social support, subjective social support and utilization of social support. After an in-depth analysis on the social support network of the elderly of losing only child, this paper attempts to change the self-pitying attitude of the elderly of losing only child as well as enable them to face up to the reality and live a life in a positive manner with the participation of social workers from the perspective of social work and the concept of helping others.to help themselves in social work. In this way; they will take a responsible attitude to themselves again and help themselves by seeking social support and fully utilizing social resources. Meanwhile, this paper endeavors to help the elderly of losing only child to seek emotional and mental support and help from other social groups when gaining economic compensations from government, community, etc. In this way, the elderly of losing only child will blend into the society and rebuild social life again rapidly.
