An Analysis Of European Union’s Soft Power Diplomacy Towards China

With reality, the paper discusses European Union’s soft power diplomacy in China by using Joseph S. Nye’s theoretical framework--soft power. At first, it introduces the concept of soft power diplomacy in detail. Secondly, from culture, political values and foreign, the paper states related facts and use cases to analyze the condition of European Union’s soft power diplomacy in China. Then it explains the reasons that European Union’s soft power diplomacy in China. In my opinion, it is a need to strengthen economic and trade cooperation between the EU and China, resist American political and military unilateralization and crate a good image. The fundamental objective is to improve China-EU relations and play a great influence in international community by taking advantage of the growing power of China. At last, the paper assesses the effect of European Union’s soft power diplomacy in China. The short of hard power, the differences of some political values and the internal develop traps are the three aspects that the EU needs to improve on the soft power diplomacy in China.There are some shortcomings in the present European Union’s soft power diplomacy in China. But the EU’s rich experience can provide guidance for China’s soft power diplomacy. China needs to invest more funds, foster competitive soft power resources and strengthen the efforts to develop soft power diplomacy in neighboring countries. Soft power should make a contribution to China’s diplomacy.
