Since the mid-1990s, the international climate negotiation has lasted for more than 20 years. At the beginning, the developed countries and the developing countries stood opposite positions in the climate negotiation and meanwhile, although there were many small groups inside the developing countries, these countries were able to unite together to struggle with the pressure from developed countries and make some achievements. With the development of the climate negotiation, some new changes appeared in the developing countries which were considered to be quite united. However, the process, cause and effect of such changes are ignored. This thesis mainly studies the developing country groups including G77+China, AOSIS, OPEC, LDCs and the BASIC and describes the changing trend of the relations of developing country groups in the climate negotiation. With the development of the negotiation, there is fragmentation in the developing country groups which used to act as a whole. Such fragmentation appears in all the negotiating issues and it will also continue in the future. The developing country groups will no longer be united as it used to be before. Many reasons lead to such fragmentation. Among them are inner factors like emerging powers’ rising from the developing country groups and differences expansion among groups. Also, there are some outer factors like differentiation policy taken by developed countries. All these causes result in the fragmentation of the developing country groups which in turn has great influence on the negotiation. On one hand, the connotation of the Principle of "Common but Differentiated Responsibilities" changes and the negotiation turns from "double track" to "one track". On the other hand, it makes the situation which developing countries are faced with more difficult and shifts the structure of the negotiation from north-South confrontation to tripartite confrontationWith the increase of its national power and release of greenhouse gas, China is not only the largest developing country but an important participator in the climate negotiation. It enjoys increasingly important status and meanwhile bears larger pressure. Now that the developing country groups are fragmented, it is of great importance for China to have good relationship with these groups. In the future, China should have better understanding of the past relations of developing country groups. What’s more, China ought to improve its policy and promote unity to protect the interests of ourselves and other developing countries.
