As the society develops, English reading not only exists in different kinds of exams,but also becomes one of the main methods for people to get information. In the processof English teaching, English reading absolutely can not be ignored. Moreover, readingcan help students keep their interest in learning English, increase knowledge and improveability.For junior high school students, English reading ability is a higher level ofcompetence requirements in the process of learning English. English reading abilityincludes the abilities of mastering and using vocabulary, grammar, cultural knowledgeand reading skills. Among those abilities, vocabulary is closely related with students’English reading level, and is the basis of cultivating students’ comprehensive languageapplication ability. Vocabulary ability is the most important ability in the basic educationstage, and the mastery degree of English grammar is also very important for students tosolve problems in reading comprehension, so to master a quantity of vocabulary andgrammar is the foundation of effective reading. Besides, learning cultural knowledge canhelp students reduce confusion resulting from the differences between eastern andwestern cultures, and help them understand the article better. For teachers, teachingstudents’ reading skills and improving their reading ability are not only the need ofmeeting students’ test ability, but also the urgent requirement of improving overallqualities of students’ English.The importance of reading ability is thus remarkable. However, due to thedifferences of students, teachers, teaching conditions and geographical environment, theeffect of junior middle school English reading teaching is also obviously different. Thisthesis takes Yulin Mizhi common middle school as the research object to understand the status of English reading teaching in the county common middle school, and finds themeasures to solve the problems through the analysis of the reasons, and providesreference and thoughts for the English teaching reform of the similar county middleschool.Through this research, the author finds that there are some problems existing in theEnglish reading teaching in Mizhi common middle school, showing as follows: firstly, inthe process of teaching, teachers pay special attention to the students’ the languageknowledge training, but ignore the cultivation of language ability; secondly, teachingmethods lack flexibility, which is difficult to arouse the enthusiasm of students toparticipate in classroom activities; thirdly, The teaching content adheres to the teachingmaterial too much and lacks the introduction of background knowledge, which isdifficult to arouse the students interest in learning. From the aspect of students, differentlevels of problems exist in learning methods, strategy consciousness, and emotionalattitude, which severely affect the improvement of quality of the reading teaching.Aimed at solving these problems, the author investigate the teachers and studentsin Mizhi common middle school, adopting some methods such as questionnaire survey,interview and so on, The results show that from the aspect of teachers, the teacher’steaching idea, teaching method, strategy awareness and the lack of clear understanding ofthe students’ individual differences are the main reasons leading to the problems. Fromthe aspect of students, bad learning habits are also an aspect of resulting in the problems.Therefore, the author puts forward some advice to improve the middle school Englishreading teaching, hoping that the advice could offer reform thought for Mizhi commonmiddle school.
