Based on small group theory proposed by Theodore.M.Mills, this paper describes the operationprocess of volunteer group of the Volunteer Union of Yantian District of Shenzhen City through deepinterviews and observation. And recruitment, management and train, motivation and evaluation arefocus of research.Theodore.M.Mills, the US sociologist, divided complicated interpersonal course into five stages:behavior, emotion, standard, group goal, group values, while scholars of our country characterized thebehavior of volunteer group as voluntary, free, contributing, commonweal, organized. In addition, twoother feature should be included, namely, durability and symbol. The emotional process of volunteergroups is embodied in internal-external interaction. Volunteers in group follow the rules of mutualequality, respect, cooperation, and help other social groups in difficulties freely and voluntarily, andthey, in turn, gain spiritual fulfillment. Volunteer criteria are designed for encouraging volunteers to“be ready to help others”, which can satisfy the volunteers’ spiritual pursuit. But some faultiness stillexists, for examples, difficulty for volunteer organizations, lack of stipulated fund sources, theregulations to maintain the rights and interests of volunteers of their own are not defined. Thevolunteer as an individual aims at promoting its life value by helping the groups in difficulties, developing the volunteer groups towards community-centeredness, projectization, specialization, legislation, internationalization. The final goal is to propagate love and civilization and to guide morepeople to join volunteer group so that the society can be developed better and more harmoniously. The value of volunteer groups is to become a high-quality conductor which can spread the volunteerspirit to more people and deliver love and warm to society and to develop the symbol of “volunteeruniform” into effective way. Hopefully, volunteer spirit can influence more people volunteer cause beflourishing, volunteer groups keep growing, and societies can develop harmoniously.
