With the increasing growth in economic and cultural communication between China andThailand, learning Chinese as a second language in Thailand has developed into an increasinglyimportant activity in recent years. There is a variety of extracurricular activities in Thailandprimary and middle schools, and the students love freedom and have lively personality, therefore, traditional teaching methods applicable in China are not very suitable for the situation inThailand. In the80’s of the last century, N.S.Prabhu proposed the task-based teaching method, whichadvocates completing the task with the target language and learning in the process of completingthe task. This method is suitable for the extracurricular teaching activities in the non-targetlanguage environment. Although the research on the theory and application of task-basedteaching method and extracurricular activities has already produced many mature results, thestudy of merging the task-based teaching concept with learning Chinese in doing extracurricularactivities is still unexplored. Therefore, according to the above situation, I have applied thetask-based teaching method in the extracurricular activities of Chinese teaching in the Thailandprimary and middle school and studied the teaching effect of applying the task-basedextracurricular activities in Chinese teaching to provide some reference for Chinese teachers inThailand.During the period of teaching practice in Thailand, I designed and implemented some task-basedextracurricular activities and explored the application and theory of the task-basedextracurricular activities. In the teaching experiment, I used the developed evaluation system of task-based extracurricular activities, which includes tests, observation scales, questionnaires, interviews and some other ways to evaluate the activity. Finally, I summarized the commontask-based extracurricular activities according to the different effects on the students’ languageskills. The conclusions of this study are as follows:1. The application of task-based extracurricular activities in the Chinese teaching in Thailandprimary and secondary school is quite feasible;2. The application of task-based activities is an effective teaching approach. It can stimulatestudents’ learning interest, consolidate classroom knowledge, and link the Chinese teachinginside and outside the classroom together, so it has a good effect on improving the effect ofclassroom teaching;3. The effect of its application can be affected by many factors, such as time, grouping, the levelof the students, the difficulty of the task and etc. We should pay more attention to these factors inthe teaching practice. This study has carried out preliminary exploration of applying both theory and experiments onthe task-based extracurricular activities in the Chinese teaching of Thailand primary andsecondary schools, which has certain practical value for enriching the overseas Chinese teachingmethod. However, due to some specific restrictions, our experiment had many limitations. Therefore, the study remains to be further explored in depth and breadth.
