Innovation is the inexhaustible driving force for the prosperity of a country. Graduatestudents as the national high-level talents, their scientific research and innovation abilityare not only the core for the quality of graduate students’ education, but also the key to theconstruction of national innovation system and to seize the commanding heights of theknowledge economy in times to come. Although, liberal arts graduate students’achievement of scientific research and innovation cannot be used in production practicedirectly, it effects the society’s development and progress indirectly. At present, the studiesabout liberal arts graduate students’ scientific research and innovation ability are relativelyrare. Existing studies are mainly on the influencing factors and training methods of liberalarts graduate students’ scientific research and innovation ability with the methods oftheoretical analysis and experience summary, empirical researches are rare.On the basis of a large number of literature surveies, the study analysises theoreticaland practical basis of the research on liberal arts graduate students’ scientific research andinnovation ability. After that, the study investigates the liberal arts graduate students inSoochow University by the self-editing questionnaire of liberal arts graduate students’scientific research and innovation ability and its influencing factors; explores thecomponents and current situation of the liberal arts postgraduates’ scientific research andinnovation ability,compares the differences of liberal arts postgraduates’ scientific researchand innovation ability in different background variables.And that, it explores theinfluencing factors of liberal arts graduate students’ scientific research and innovationability.The results show that:1.Liberal arts graduate students’ scientific research and innovation ability consists ofthree dimensions: basic ability of innovation,knowledge innovation ability and innovationpractice ability. 2. There are significant differences between liberal arts postgraduates’ scientificresearch and innovation ability and different background variables.3. All dimensions of liberal arts graduate students’ scientific research and innovationability are significantly positive correlated with all the influencing factors. Personal factorsand teacher factors can predict the liberal arts graduate students’ total points of scientificresearch and innovation ability and knowledge innovation ability positively. Personalfactors, cultivation mechanism, course and teaching factors can predict liberal artspostgraduates’ basic ability of innovation positively. Personal factors, tutor factors andscientific environmental factors can predict the liberal arts graduate students’ innovationpractice ability.
