Higher education resource is an important foundation of deciding the quality and scale of regional higher education. And it is also a powerful guarantee for building innovative country and promoting international influence. Grasping the spatial distribution pattern and evolution process of our higher education resources accurately and exploring its existing problems and formation reasons are of great importance for optimizing the structure of higher education, promoting the coordinated development of regional higher education and social economy and promoting national status. The study uses the Gini coefficient, Wolfson space polarization index, thematic maps, cartogram figure, average center tools, orientation distribution tools, weighting method and other methods to depict the space distribution feature on the number, education expenditure, science and research expenditure, teacher resource, property assets, key disciplines laboratory, students, science and technology output indicators of different category of colleges and universities. According to the analysis, we draw the conclusions as follows. Firstly, there exists partition education in our country. Higher education resource concentration is high in the core regional education center provinces, gathering in several provinces of eastern and central regions. Overall unbalance is strong and the degree of space polarization is high. Secondly, on basis of analyzing the spatial evolution process of our country’s higher education resources which are divided into the origin, the republic of China, the beginning of the founding, and recent stage of reform and opening-up,it is concluded that the reasons for differentiation of space distribution of China’s higher education resources are as follows:based on the initial pattern of higher education resources formed in the early20th century, dominated by national policies, influenced by the geographical environment, political environment, population distribution, economic development level and other factors, it is formed by differentiation of investment according to return on investment funds under Circular Cumulative Causation. Finally we compare the distribution pattern of higher education resources between China and America to put forward related Suggestions.
