Abstract:This paper is both an exploratory research and a descriptive study on the career development for underage workers. Adopting the qualitative research method, this paper studies the underage workers in Factory Y in Dongguan. Based on the socialization theory and career development theory, with self-recognition and career-awareness as two features of the career of underage workers, the paper assesses and analyzes the current situation of career management of underage workers as well as the looming problems. Study reveals a series of issues; for example, the juvenile are not well aware of self-recognition and career planning and they are lack of distinct career objective. Besides, their action may fail to be in accordance with the target and there is an overall need of improvement in their comprehensive quality and work competence. The factory is also to blame as not enough attention is paid to the vocational education and training for underage workers and some guidance for the career development of the juvenile under organized system is missed. The author of the paper attempts to apply the method of social group work to the career development for underage workers. By learning CGLC mode career planning, designing and implementing group work services, we raise the juvenile’s recognition of self and career, improve their ability of career management, and help construct a peer support network where organizational resources are linked. Meanwhile, educational counseling and professional support are provided for those who are in want.To make a summary of the services, first of all, social workers need to determine the theme, contents and forms of the services on the basis of socialization feature of the underage workers during services. Secondly, as the underage workers are in the exploratory stage of career development, social workers need to help explore their potential occupational options, bearing in mind the characteristics and missions of said stage in career. Thirdly, social workers shall connect the career services for underage workers with enterprise management, advocating and promoting the consummation of the factory’s care system for underage workers. And summing up the study, social group work can intervene with the career development for underage workers from the aspects of principle, methodology and contents:principles and methods exert influence on the ideology of career development for underage workers; carry out the vocational education should be according to their aptitude, pay attention to discover team members’ability and group resource sharing; promote if necessary career services for underage workers.The outcome of the study makes for the development of career services for underage workers, impacting to certain degree the consummation of factory’s education and training for underage workers. Last but not the least, the paper demonstrates the necessity of social work’s intervention in career development for underage workers and proffers suggestion concerning career development for employees.
