Mathematics teaching centres around the development of students’ mathematicalthinking. Studying the features of mathematical thinking and the characteristics of thedevelopment of senior high students’ mathematical thinking together with exploringdifferent approaches to expanding students’ mathematical thinking space by classroomteaching is not only beneficial to the improvement of the quality of teaching but alsodoes good to the elaboration of the educational function of teaching mathematics. This paper is based on empirical research by adopting the methods of documentanalysis, questionnaire survey, interview and classroom observations. In the first place, this thesis clarifies in theory mathematical thinking and the development ofmathematical thinking in senior high school teaching. On the basis of this, thequestionnaire survey and interview are carried out so as to get a general knowledge ofthe current situation in senior high school. By doing statistical analysis and makingcomparisons with some model lessons, the writer comes to the conclusion that thecurrent senior high school classroom teaching leaves much to be desired in that teachersfocus too much on the short-term learning results instead of the training of students’mathematical thinking, that teachers pay little attention to students’ cognitive abilitywhen introducing the new theorem so that students lack the cognition of the essence ofthe knowledge and that teachers concentrates too much on the techniques rather than theknowledge itself. In the second place, the writer puts forward some practical teachingprinciples and strategies concerning the expansion of students thinking in combinationwith the writer’s personal teaching experiences. These principles and strategies includethe following aspects: lead in, the teaching of concept or theorem and the teaching ofproblem-solving skills. Finally, the thesis touches the positive influence of expandingstudents’ thinking space and also some problems which may be brought about in theprocess.
