The Basic Skill Contest for physical education major students(hereinafter referredto as "basic skills contest") is not only an effective way to test the achievements ofteaching reform, but also a guidance for it. In order to have a comprehensiveunderstanding about the effect of the contest organization and content, the effect of thefaculty team and curriculum construction, as well as the effect of evaluation system andphysical education development, this article uses kinds of methods to analysis theresult,the organization,the contents,the evaluation system and implementation of theHUNAN Basic Skills Contest, such as the literature material law, questionnaireinvestigation, expert interview method, on-the-spot investigation method, mathematicalstatistics and logical analysis. At last, it is concluded that:①the three years Basic SkillContests, thought exposed few shortages,were a success by showing the advantages ofeach college. However,the contest will have a broader and prospective developmentwith stronger vitality if it can put more emphasis on the “basic skills”.②The contestsare meaningful since lots of teachers and students are fond of and speak highly of it.③The time system to select the participating students has been improving, which shortensthe colleges targeted training time for participating students.④The Basic Skill Contesthas no good effects on the construction of teachers team and the two aspects ofcurriculum construction: partial reinforcements and partial weakening.⑤As part of theproject settling has weakness, the Basic Skill Contest can not fully reflect the coreknowledge of education major, also can’t fully reflect the “basic skills” in this BasicSkill Contest we call.⑥The way to determine the contest’s content and holding timehas many shortages.First, contents of the project are too difficult and single. Second,theholding time is settled too early. Meanwhile,the construction of the project contents hasbeen becoming more reasonable.⑦The evaluation system of the Basic Skill Contestalso has many problems, among which, the way to determine the test ranking based onthe score and time not only exposed the flaw of the exam-oriented education, but alsorun far away from the contest’s original purpose. In order to strengthen the vitality andhighlight the real “basic skills”, the author proposes few suggestions as follow:①Allthe participating colleges should make full use of their advantages, Strengthening thepropaganda of the contest and paying more attention on it.②The EducationDepartment in Hunan Province also should pay more emphasis on the organization formso that more and more teachers and students can participate in it, which will trulyimprove the construction of faculty team and cultivate the student’s abilities. Inaddition,it will objectively reflect every college’s real situation.③Improving thecontest’s scientificity and reasonability to achieve the purpose of promoting thedevelopment of faculty team construction,improving major and course construction and cultivating the students.④Be more reasonable on holding time settling.The best wayis to determine the necessary contents firstly, then to discuss the rang of other contents,last but not least, to settle down all the contest contents at the right time(4) improvingthe scientificity of the evaluation system. It should abandon the bad influence of theexam-oriented education by using quantitative method or grading evaluation tocomprehensively reflect the student’s overall level of basic skills, rather than todetermine the contest ranking by scores.
