China has been a united multi-ethnic country since ancient times. Each ethnic group has its own unique history, culture and customs. The culture of each ethnic group has its value, and it should be respected. Among the over thirty trans-provincial ethnic groups, the number of Korean Chinese are relatively more than others who living in the northeast China. Korean Chinese has its own spoken and written language. Within Jilin province, besides Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture, they scattered in Jilin city and Changchun as well. Those who live in the scattered community are more easily influenced by the mainstream culture, because they are living in the mainstream cultural circles. The cultural integration between the Korean Chinese and the Hans blur the ethnic boundary, it leads to the reduction of ethnic identity and the decrease of ethnic knowledge among the young Korean Chinese who living in the scattered community. In addition, adolescents constitute a high proportion of stay-at-home children. Eighty percent students who study in the Jilin Korean High School are stay-at-home children. Because they are lack of family education, school education takes more responsibility in their socialization growth.From ethnological perspective, this thesis analyzes the development and current situation of the Korean school in the scattered community, and highlights the functionality of education. Through cultural communication, cultural ecology, cultural selection and interaction theory, this thesis will interprets the education in Korean school within the scattered community, and analyzes the problems faced by school, then give its own suggestion about the school development.Choosing Jilin Korean High School as her field survey sites, the author considers Jilin as the general environment of the scattered community for the Korean Chinese’s, and sees its outstanding teaching effectiveness as well. Although the survey is preceded in author’s hometown, as she is Han, there are some questioning come from the school at the beginning. Because there are competitions between the Korean schools as well as competition between the Korean and Han schools.This thesis is divided into four parts:Chapter one, the first part is introduction. It mainly introduces the purport, theory and method of this thesis, as well as sort out the current situation in the relevant areas of Korean Chinese’s education. The existing research focused on the following categories:national education policy studies, history of Korean education development, Korean culture courses, Korean elementary education textbooks, minority acculturation, bilingual teaching and research on Korean settlement. There is relatively little research on the education in the scattered community. Author hope through studying the current educational situation in the scattered community, it can bring the attention to the development of ethnic education in there. After analyzing the problems faced by the Korean school in the scattered community, author hopes that we can discuss and find a way to solve these problems.Chapter two, choosing Jilin Korean High School as the target for the field survey, the author do a descriptive study based on the selected material and interviews. This part briefly introduces the development of the school, school principle and the entrance percentage. Jilin Korean High School is in the critical period of educational philosophy changing. From teaching-center to learning-centered, teacher and students all become the main part of studying. Expending competence-oriented education by small-size-class teaching enhances the emotional communication between teacher and students, it also improves the autonomy and enthusiasm of the students. As an ethnic school in the scattered community, the educational content of Jilin Korean High School shows cultural diversity of the local area. On the one hand, the basic course teaches at school are following the national curriculum standards, it reflect the mainstream cultural education. On the other hand, Korean school should focus on the characteristics of its own ethnic culture and proceeding ethnic cultural education. While they carry out the bilingual teaching, there are also varieties of campus activity, festival and cultural events to let the students experience the cultural atmosphere. By doing these, they create an ethnic and cultural environment on campus. Except those, school also signs some agreements with Korea and Japan to send exchange students and offer an opportunity to the students to experience the intercultural education. School takes part in student’s socialization growth more.Chapter three, this part analyzes the real problems faced by Jilin Korean High School. The shrinking size of students and inadequate funding for education is the development dilemma objectively. The curriculum settings of ethnic cultural education are the subjective issue. Ethnic cultural classes are lack of unified curriculum arrangement, fixed materials, professional teachers and syllabus. Teachers need to update their knowledge and change their educational concepts. Meanwhile school has to develop students’abilities, make educational choices and deal with their career aspirations. Those problems bother the families who live in the scattered community and influent their decisions to select school for their child who are in the basic education phase. It can be summarized as whether go to the Han school or the Korean one.Chapter four, this part will discuss the exploration of the ways for the development of Korean school in the scattered community. Government and school have tried to raise funds by all possible means to solve the problem of inadequate funding for education. School is going through the curriculum reform in the center of school-based. The development of school curriculum is good for standardizing the school ethnic cultural education as well as cultivating students’comprehensive quality. Construction of school-basic curriculum and changes in teaching method need a study oriented teaching stuff. As long as the overall quality of the teaching stuff and their teaching ability has improved, the teaching quality of the whole school can elevate. School and parents need to know the professional settings in the university to make a suitable career objective for the student.
