Map is no stranger to people, often visible in the daily study and life, such as teaching materialsin the illustrations, the map of China, such as traffic road map. Map with the appearance of informative,intuitive, practical wait for a characteristic, is an important carrier of bearing and dissemination ofinformation. So, the application of map is closely connected with daily life and study, map literacy hasbecome the necessary basic qualities of modern citizens based on society. Map is quite important in theposition in geography, it not only can better reflect geography space, such as regional disciplinecharacteristic, and is an essential content and tool of geography learning. Just as the famous former Sovietunion economic geographers Baron said:"the map is the second language of geography." However, thesurvey found that the current the general high school students in our country, especially high schoolstudents at the county, their map literacy present situation are not ideal. Therefore, it is of great significanceto study high school students of map literacy at the county level.Through looking up a large number of literature and works, combing with the observation forstudents in of actual geography teaching, students’ reflection, this article finally determined the researchsubject. This paper is based on educational psychology, geography, cartography and so on, combining withthe geography new curriculum reform’s spirit and the research status both at abroad and at home, andredefines again the topic of research subject “map literacy” and clears the research significance. And onthis basis, this paper obtains the research data and information, through the questionnaire, and interview forhigh school and geography teacher in view of the “map literacy” questions, then the reflection fromstudents and geography teacher. When analyzing and summarizing of the research results, at the same time,this paper further analyzes the main cause of high school students’ map literacy status quo and accordingexplore a series of strategies improve high school students’ map literacy status quo.Through the research main conclusions as flows: Currently high school students’ map literacy islow at Xiayi county. It mainly displays that the map awareness is low,High school students have notformed the habit of “map is left and book is right”, when encountered problems in the study, the test or the life, the tendency of they using maps and consciousness is not strong; Ordinary they pay attention to thetext and overlook map; a lot of map problems are by feeling to solve, figure not map or can’t carefullyobserve and analyze. All in all the conscious of reading and using map are both lower. The map ability isnot strong: Once seeing map causes “dizzy figure”, don’t know where laid a hand on him; Don’tunderstand that figure of map; at a loss as to when seeing the map; Poor sense of direction, unabledetermine the direction; Unable to distinguish between map types; The memory of map is incomplete ormemory retrievals failure; Unable to flexibly use map; Don’t make better combination map with figure. Allin all, high school students’ ability of reading, using, drawing map to solve the problem are relatively low.Map emotion is weak,be afraid of map and map problems, emotion and attitude towards map is cold, lackof interest and feeling; value and world view is not too scientific. Map knowledge is lack,students havelittle knowledge of the map, and not grasp firmly.To improve the map literacy level of high school students at Xiayi County, the key lies in thestudents themselves should enhance understanding of map’ importance enhance, change ideas, payattention to study geography and map; practice seriously, read more map, analyze more map and drawmore map; master methods and skills of reading map, use learning strategies for map,etc. Geographyteacher should firstly change the traditional teaching idea, sets up the map teaching view, seriouslyimplement the spirit of new curriculum reform and the implementation of the geography curriculum;improve their map literacy, reverse the weak status of map education; according to their aptitude, usereasonably teaching methods, guide and teach students.and change original idea, pay attention to geography and map; strengthen the map practice,readmore map, lay amphasis on the methods of reading map; master methods and skill of reading map, uselearning strategies to learn map,etc.Geography teacher should firstly change the traditional teaching ideas,set up the map teaching view, carry out seriously the spirit of the new curriculum reform and the newgeography curriculum standard; enhance their map literacy, reverse the weak status of map education;according to their aptitude, use reasonably teaching methods, guide and teach students.
