The cultural traditions of Chinese society values traditional family and bloodrelationship."Home" is an important channel for us to get the material and spiritual support. With the ongoing exchanges across the Taiwan straits, Taiwan government has openedlocal universities to mainland students since2011, which means that the study of theparenthood of this group has important practical significance. In the process of keeping thefamily intimacy in these "split families", communication is a very important element, whichcan establish a bond between parents and children. Communication needs some kinds ofmedia, so we can study the family parenthood from the point of the application of mediainthis sense. In another sense, mediate chnology is different from the general technology andclosely related with the mind and thoughts of human being. Human spread their thoughtsthrough media technology, thus the study of technology application of familycommunication is essential for the study of parenthood. This paper firstly discusses the evolution of media technologies in family sphere fromtwo aspects, internal motivation and external motivation, and illustrates the characteristic ofdifferent media technologies. Based on the present situation of parent-child communicationof mainland students in Taiwan, the influence of application of media technology on theparent-child relationship mechanism is analyzedfrom micro-level using the research methodof grounded theory, on the basis of which the media selection model of mainland studentsin Taiwan has been built. This research takes the mainland students in Taiwan whomseparated from their native familiesin geographic spaceas research objects. By the researchmethod of grounded theory, it shows that mainland students in Taiwan mostlycommunicate with their parents with mobile phones and Internet media, which is accordwith the current status of media technology environment in our country. At the same time,in the process of interview the effect of parent-child communication of mainland studentsin Taiwan is also analyzed, which further reveals the influence mechanism of mobilephones and Internet on the parent-child relationship. From a macro point of view, mobilephones and Internet can overcome the inconvenience from geographic isolation andconstruct a "virtual present" which vicariously meets the parents and children’desire forinterpersonal interaction. But the mechanism is not the same.Studies have shown thatmobile phones receive general preference of the parent-child relationship, but the Internet presents the imperfection. Especially that maintaining family relationsreflects lessdependence on the Internet, mainly diaplayedby their parents’ digital divide of the network. The research has also found that, parents play an important role in sustaining theparent-child relationship in the process of energizing. Further in-depth studis show that thesame media technology brings different effects on parent-child relationship. And for onerespondent, different media technology or the same media technology under differentbackground of time and space always has different effect on the parent-child relationship. In a word, media technology’s influence on the parent-child relationship is verycomplicated. Based on grounded theory research, this paper builds amedia selectionmodelof the mainland students in Taiwan, which is a useful complement to the existingresearch in the field of ICT communication form. Finally, after the philosophical reflection, interaction between technology and human has been illustrated from the perspective of thephilosophy of technology, and put forward that using reason to promote the harmoniousdevelopment between man and technology.
