As the promotion of quality education in China, students’ oral English ability has been emphasized more than before. In a traditional Chinese class, because of the large number of students in a class, teachers find it difficult for them to improve the students’ oral English ability. Although many primary school students get good scores in their written tests, their oral English ability is far below expectation. Thus, a number of studies about this problem have been done.A new approach to English teaching---team teaching is employed in the English class. Team teaching refers to an organized teaching form in which two or more teachers make up the team teaching, draft the teaching plan together, and implement the teaching activities and conduct the teaching evaluation together on the basis of democracy, equality and voluntary. Team teaching allows for more creative teaching, allows teachers to learn through observing each other, and gives teachers the opportunities to work with smaller groups of learners.Based on the literature at home and abroad, the paper tries to explore the effective procedures of team teaching and investigate whether the students’ oral English ability can be improved by team teaching. The subjects of the research are Grade Five students from Shenyang Normal University North Affiliated School. Through a questionnaire, the author finds that students have low interest of learning English before the team teaching experiment while after the experiment, their interest of learning English has been improved. With the help of SPSS 17.0 to analyze the data of the pre-test and the post-test, the author discovers that students’ oral English has been greatly improved after the team teaching experiment and the fluency of their oral English improved most. The author also conducts several interviews and finds out the reason that students like English classes more than before is that they think the activities in class are far more interesting, and they have the power to fulfill the task and activities.At last, the author concludes the value of team teaching. It can provide the students with more opportunity to practice speaking English under the abundant guidance of the teachers. The teachers can also better motivate the students’ learning interest and provide the students a good environment which can lower the students’ anxiety and enhance the students’ confidence. The author also states the limitation of the study and offers some suggestions to the researchers on team teaching in the future.
