This research mainly deals with massive open online courses(MOOCs) and the regarding learning support service(LSS) within it. Current researches on learning support services are focus on the construction of high-quality curriculum, open courses, distance education platforms etc. much emphasis are put on things like resource construction, platform set-up, less attention are put on learners themselves. In fact, online learning students are quite a dynamic group that should never be ignored when designing an online learning platform. The initial idea of conducting this research starts from the unpleasant online learning experience experienced by researchers and the peer learners. Their degree of satisfaction, engagement and overall performance is low, and mainly manifested in high enrollment rate yet low finishing rate, along with poor retention rate. We base the research on a promise that the current learning support services in MOOCs is not matured enough, and the sense of frustration learner encountered can be blamed on LLS within MOOCs. We try to figure out the "why factors" behind students’ poor experience during MOOCs learning by putting learning support services on a boarder sense, dividing the LLS system into five independent parts, then analyze what is wrong with each segment. In addition, the research is undertaken from three perspectives:the learners, teachers and researchers, though those different angles we expect to explore the interrelationships between learning support services and the well being of online learning, alone with which we propose countermeasures regarding those problems. For the part of research methods, we want this research being both qualitative and quantitative, in this light we can combine the merits of both methods(i.e. the case research in qualitative method and data processing in quantitative research). Also we want do it comparatively, by comparing the traditional distance education and the current MOOCs, understanding how the relevant concepts, technology, theories changing throughout the years. We compare the LSS in MOOCs both horizontally and vertically, in horizontal comparison the investigator summarized the LSS development in a global sense, while in vertical comparison we did it according to the time order. Literature review are crucial as the summary of previous researches lied the foundation of whole project, in this paper we reviewed the relevant researches of three stages--the germinating/rudimentary stage, the development period and mature period. Internet-based survey is applied, given the specificity of online learning research, last but not least, the supporting theories in this research are flow theory, connectivisim, and dual-coding theory. The research indicates a progress in subsystems like technology support, evaluation support, yet insufficient emotional support turn out to be a hinder in delivering quality courses. Therefore some improving measures are proposed in the end part of this paper, i.e. applying learner’s characteristics analysis technology, enriching the functionality of social media, perfecting teacher assistant team, using educational data mining method.
