The Weakening Of The Interests Expressing Mechanism Of The Student Union In The Administrative Trend Of Universities

Administrative power, academic power and student power are the three major components of the power system in universities. However, in reality, the three powers are not of equal status. Particularly, student power, which should be the main power in the system, is always overlooked. This essay classifies Student Union as official NGO and discuss the interest expressing mechanism using Nanjing L University as the research object based on the theory of’ corporatism’. Our research problems are as follows:as the representative of students’ interest, to what degree can Student Union help to express students’interest? During the process of interest expressing, what factors will affect or even obstruct the functionality of Student Union?The methodology employed in this essay are text analysis, literature review and practical interview. By three-stage practical investigation, we have gained fully understanding of the current status of Student Union as well as its interest expressing mechanism. Through the case, it is found that the interests expressing mechanism and the role or function of the student union is weakening in the background of the administrative trend of universities. The requirements transmitted are ’filtered’ in advance and the mechanism of interest expression serves nothing more than a ’hollow transmission pipe of information’. Moreover, alternative mechanism of interest expression emerges.There are three major reasons for the weakening of the interest expressing mechanism. First, the university itself is over-administrative. Second, the Student Union faces structural difficulties in reality. Third, the students have not fully noticed their own rights as students. Thus, in order to restore the functionality of Student Union as a bridge of communication, the reform of university Student Union is imperative and’de-administration’ of universities is an effective way to push the Student Union back to its own position. It is also beneficial to the sustainable development of student officers, students, universities and social citizens. To achieve’de-administration’,universities should manage the universities by law and emphasize academic achievements. Supervisory bodies should be established as well.
